What to Do if You are Having a Bad Day

{ 4 comments }

Bad days. We all have them. Even once we are living our Custom Built Life™.

They can be caused by many different things – fights with loved ones, not enough sleep, unmet expectations, outcomes we don’t like.

Sometimes a bad day can turn into a bad week or a bad month and really derail you from creating your Custom Built Life and making positive changes in your life.

What do you do?

When you are having a bad day, what do you do about it? Do you grouse and moan? Do you tough it out, hoping that tomorrow (or the next day, or the next day, or the day after that) is better?

Or are you proactive and take action to shift your bad day for the better?

How to Make a Bad Day Better

If you are tired of waiting out your bad days, watch this 4 minute video to learn a strategy that can help you shorten them and get life running smoother again.

The best time to make your list is when you are having a really good day. If you wait until you are feeling discouraged, frustrated, or sad it is difficult to remember what will make you feel better. The worse you feel the more difficult it is to think of things that make you feel joyful, optimistic and enthusiastic.

When it comes time to put your new list to use, don’t be afraid to choose the activity that you feel least motivated to do. Often that is the one that has the biggest impact on your mood!

Your Assignment

Sit down today and create a list of activities that make you feel better, improve your mood, and increase your positive energy. Once you have this list written or typed out find a home for it. Place it somewhere where you see it every day – maybe on the corner of your desk, thumb tacked to the inside of a kitchen cabinet, or taped to your bathroom mirror – so it is easy to find when you need it.

Once you have created your list, please share your top three activities in the comments below. The examples will help anyone who is feeling challenged in creating their own list.

    1. Reading
    2. Taking a long, hot bath
    3. Going for a coffee/tea at a coffee shop by myself

Can I also add that as much as possible, find some time to do things on your list everyday. I’ve found that by deliberately taking a little while (even just 15-30 minutes) of me time decreases my stress and lessens the chance of bad days. Bad days can’t be eliminated totally of course, but by getting in the habit of taking a little time to regroup, de-stress, and plan they may occur less often.

Ryanne, I love your list! I feel more relaxed just reading it and making time for relaxation can often bring a boost to a bad day.
I absolutely agree that making time for your feel good activities every day lessens the chance of bad days popping up! Lack of self care is a recipe for overwhelm and exhaustion both which sap our mood, our patience, our effectiveness, and our compassion for ourselves and others!

Stacy – good techniques to just STOP and do something that makes you feel good. A tip I read recently was to say the word CANCEL loudly to stop the thoughts of that downer talk or feeling. I like to dance for a few minutes, take a walk, read, and do a quick 5 item gratitude countdown.

Virginia, great ideas! Thanks for sharing! Yes, the key is to stop and address how you are feeling rather than just ignoring it and plowing through. I love the 5 item gratitude countdown! I don’t think a bad mood and gratitude can exist together in the same place at the same time. 🙂
